Oddly Adobe Reader X is now entirely unable to open PDFs from network locations when navigating via Windows Explorer. real path: \?\C:\Users\\Documents\desktop.iniĬonsider modifying policy using these policy rules: FILES_ALLOW_ANY or FILES_ALLOW_DIR_ANYįor testing I tried reverting to Adobe Reader X, which we had previously been using.Adding the network paths to in Privileged locations in Adobe Reader Security (Enhance) has no impact.Disabling Protected Mode causes the issue to go away.Additional PDFs can be opened by navigating from the Adobe Reader File Menu. The issue only occurs with PDFs stored on a network share, when open through Windows Explorer. But the first attempt makes the screen flash quickly. It occurs whenever Adobe Reader is already open, whether or not Reader is actually displaying a PDF. But Adobe Reader DC is already open, then users cannot open a PDF from a network share, when navigating through Windows Explorer. If Adobe Reader DC is not open, then the (1st) PDF opens properly from a network share. The issue came to my attention when users stated reporting not being able to open multiple PDFs in Reader. Security wise I really don't want to turn Protected Mode off. It seems to have something to do with a recent MS update, Adobe Protected Mode, Windows Shell and UNC paths. The Environments are all Server 2012 or Server 2012 R2 Essentials. But we had installed an number of Windows and Server Updates over the weekend. It just started Monday and we hadn't updated Adobe Reader (autoupdates disabled).
But I haven't seen this one before and it has me stumped.
I know there have been repeated issues with Protected Mode and network locations over the years.
